While working as an assistant to Norbert Walter, the chief economist of Deutsche Bank, between 2006 and 2007, Linnemann, a devout Catholic, developed a passion for economics.

He has been serving on the Committee on Labor and Social Affairs since 2009, where he serves as the representative of his parliamentary group on welfare payments (Arbeitslosengeld II).

Following the 2013 federal elections, negotiations to establish a Grand Coalition of the Christian Democrats (CDU) with the Bavarians (CSU) and the Social Democrats (SPD) took place in order to form a Grand Coalition.

During the working group on labour policy, which was chaired by Ursula von der Leyen and Andrea Nahles, Linnemann was a member of the CDU/CSU delegation.
